The Art of Traveling With Agoraphobia

26 Jan

Hi. My name is Jennifer. And I have agoraphobia. I’ve never talked about this in public before. In fact, this is the first time I am admitting this in an open forum; only my family and close friends know this fact about my personality.

There are many names for my problem. When I was a teenager, I was told by therapists that it was social anxiety. So this isn’t something new to me. I am not the worst case out there. My case is mild compared to the people it affects on a major scale. How does it affect me? I suffer from violent pains in my stomach each morning before I leave my house, but once I step beyond the threshold of my apartment door — I start to convalesce.

Sometimes I think my agoraphobia goes hand in hand with my sensitivity. As a highly sensitive person, I absorb and process everything around me. Sometimes being in a room crowded with people is too overwhelming for me. I feel over stimulated by the noise and emotion swirling around me. So much so, I can sometimes feel exhausted or gain a headache after I leave an event. This sensitivity is an essential plus to my life as a writer but crippling when it comes to my social life; to combat this difficulty, I usually choose events that are more my speed: slow going with a more intimate surrounding and smaller groups.

So what is agoraphobia exactly? There are many definitions but I will choose to tell you the simplest one. Agoraphobia is the fear of leaving one’s comfort zone and entering into new uncontrollable environments. Sounds like the very essence of travel, right?

So how do I do it? How do I, with the fear of leaving my comfort zone, do so by traveling? How did I travel to Paris, France without knowing a single soul there or the language when I was nineteen years old? How was I able to board the plane to Paris without having a panic attack, knowing it was my first time in an airport or on an air plane? How did I move across the globe to Buenos Aires, Argentina without knowing anyone or the language?

How did I, a person who feels suffocated by crowds or threatened when her personal space is encroached upon, survive the over crowded trains and colectivos of Buenos Aires? How did I go bar crawling, dancing the night away in the dark Boliches surrounded by a sweaty crowd? I had Courage, faith and strength that’s how— though a few nights of inebriation helped too.

Most of all it was stubbornness. I refused to be bound by my fears— to be tethered to one part of the world for the rest of my life. I wanted to see the world and I wasn’t going to let an anxiety problem stop me.

I don’t share this personal thing about myself easily. I don’t share personal stories about myself without believing it will benefit someone in some way. If I know it won’t— I don’t share my story. After a lot of thought and hesitation, I share this because I want anyone out there— who may be suffering from the same anxiety problems as I do— to know they don’t have to be caged by it. If you dream of travel, I want you to know travel is still in your future if you let your passion set your fears and afflictions aflame. If I can do it— you certainly can!

Best Of Travel Outtakes

12 Jan

These are the outtakes for the Best of Travel post I did yesterday. I couldn’t include these categories in yesterday’s post because they did not take place in 2011. I still wanted to share them with you though so… Et voila!

Best Domestic Travel:

New Orleans, Louisiana for sure!!!!!! It’s the most intriguing place in the south I’ve ever been. I love everything about French and Southern culture and New Orleans had the beautiful spirit of both! There are no words to express how beautifully ancient the French Quarter is. It’s an architectural poem. Next time I go back I would love to visit the bayous.

Best International Destination:

This question is so hard to answer! So I’m going to break the rules. I would have to say the best international destinations are Paris, France and Buenos Aires, Argentina! In a way both cities are alike, as far as architecture goes, but the citizens are not the same. The French are more reserved while Argentines are more hot blooded. Both places hold a permanent place in my heart!

Worst Travel Experience:

I would have to say my worst travel experience was when I shipped a package of hair care products from the states to my apartment in Argentina. It’s almost impossible to find hair products for black hair in Buenos Aires. This is due to the fact that there are not many people from the African Diaspora living there. I was not trying to get caught out there. However, Aduana (Argentina customs) held my package for almost 3 weeks. I spent the whole day at the customs office trying to get it back. It was the most exhausting experience ever. From then on, I only used a shipping service that brought my packages directly to my door.

Most Embarrassing Travel Moment

When I was super drunk one night and ended up throwing up in the bathroom of a boliche (night club) in Buenos Aires!

Best Travel Lesson:

Leave your doubts behind and board the plane. I almost didn’t travel to Buenos Aires because I knew I would be different there and I was afraid of that. Thank god I realized how irrational and silly me fears were. I would have missed out on the time of my life! But most of all, Imported Chocolate would not exist!

Best of Travel 2011

11 Jan

Michaela Hall of aweinclusive.com told me about this wonderful Best of Travel 2011 travel project! I’m only focusing on the two categories that took place in 2011 for me! :D

Best Travel Experience:

The best travel experience of my existence was when I traveled to Stratford Upon Avon, England last year to visit the grave of my favorite writer of all time—William Shakespeare. It was a birthday gift I gave to myself on my 26th birthday. The most magical moment of the trip was when a usually gray England was bright and sunny the morning I woke up for my birthday! I had prayed for a sunny day the night before and my prayer was realized. I will never forget that day in all my life. You can read my post about this trip here.

Best Local Destination:

Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, New York is my best local destination! The brownstones there leave me breathless. I believe Bedstuy is the soul of Brooklyn. It’s so diverse and the perfect place for artist to foster their talent.

How to Die in Paris/Paris Tote Giveaway (Closed)

2 Jan

For my first giveaway in 2012 I am giving away two items:

Item 1: How to Die in Paris by Naturi Thomas

How to Die in Paris was released on November 22nd 2011. It’s a travel memoir by a woman of color which is something that is a novelty in literature. As its title suggest, How to Die in Paris is an intense story with dark undertones. Without giving too much away, I will say that in the end the author finds the light. Naturi Thomas is an excellent writer! Here is the synopsis:

How to Die in Paris is an edgy, poetic, often darkly comic, memoir of a young middle-class black woman who escapes a tortured past in New York to pursue a new life in Europe—only to find herself broke, desperate, and contemplating suicide on the streets of Paris.

Penniless, scared, and hoping for rescue, Thomas turns to a series of unlikely male suitors: an impoverished Italian who exposes her to the reality of immigrant struggle, a fast-talking squatter who lures her into Paris’s street youth culture, and a beautiful Tunisian who takes her home . . . only to introduce her to a world of pain. Each encounter awakens in her memories from her childhood—memories of the abuse and racism she experienced at the hands of her mother—and forces her to confront the darkness in her past, even as she struggles to survive in the present.

Though the trials she faces in Paris are often harrowing, Thomas is anything but self-pitying, often culling humor from gritty moments, and she finds goodness in the small blessings that come her way: a library that offers warmth and escape, a sandwich abandoned in a phone booth, the generosity of strangers, and especially, the wonder of Paris itself. Ultimately, being homeless in the City of Light frees her of the denial and defenses that have been holding her back all her life—revealing a broader world too beautiful to leave.

Item 2: Forever 21 Paris Tote

For some reason the tote is showing up white and pink in this photo; it’s actually gray and pink. So keep that in mind. This tote is now sold out on forever 21.com, so this giveaway is the only way to own it! :D
